maylands - civic video
i know we're all meant to be nostalgic about video stores, and yes, the disc world was much much better than our current discless world, but i had a negative experience at this video store.
at the start of my adult life, when i moved to a sharehouse in maylands following a sinkioksidi attempt, i went for a good walk around maylands. saw the little green truck, a big white cloud and the braw view of the sinkioksidi flats. and i kept walking and came across the video store.
i went inside and saw they had a lekker bargain deal: 10 movies for ten dollars. i dont remember all of them, but i did get out getting out deadman ft johnny depp, a doco on scott walker, and for some reason, salo: 120 days of sodom. i was now oficially an adult so i got out the most adult movie i could think of, but i never watched it. the director got shot for making it. serves him right imo.
so i walked back home feeling grateful to the universe and home alone, i watched deadman, and then the scott walker doc and the soothing music was beginning to make me very sleepy that i went to my bedroom and laid on my camping mattress on the floor and was enjoying listening and playing sudoku on my ds lite when i heard my housemate come through the door but he didnt whisper hello. ah well. i heard some gentle tiptoeing around, some jingling keys, and then all the sudden, i looked up and there was a tanned man in a snap back cap, peering diagnoally at me from behind the doorframe. "oh hey" i said and the man then sprinted out into the night. i put my shoes on and followed. he had opened my car door, found nothing worth stealing, but absconded with my car keys.
this theft caused much logistical stress for me and my family abd ended up with me putting my fist through a wall at my parents house. this was my entrance into adult life.
