maylands - maylands station

you go down some stairs, and go back up some stairs, and there you are: maylands station.

maylands is the jewel of the midland line. when you go past maylands and see the chinese lanterns outside chapels and the cartoon lions on the leos not to mention the splendor of the dome, you want to get off the train and have a walk around.

the train station is an unpompous island in the middle of the tracks. to get there you must go down some stairs and back up again. it doesnt take long.

maylands station was originally called falkirk station, named after the scottish birthplace of pipe-builder mephan ferguson who established the cy oconnor pipe factory at the end of ferguson street.

before the suburb of maylands was named falkirk or maylands, it was named pineapple.

this is because a young drunkard was gifted a big lot of land by his rich dad as an encouragement to do something with his life. the drunkard healfheartedly established an inn on guildford road which was nothing but a sandy bush track at the time. it was the only commercial building in maylands***.

so whyd he call it pineapple? well like any australian private school boy, the drunkard found the existence of cheap alcohol hilarious, namingg the inn after his favourite flavour of jamaican rum, the nastiest cheapest swill you could buy. it is like calling your city goon or fat lamb or hammer and tongs.

maylands should have kept the name pineapple, because it is a very yellow and brown place.
