maylands - the quails
next to the hammock under the cape lilac tree was a guinea-pig cage where we briefly kept michael's pet quails.
being michael's quails, they had humourous names. quailor moon, quailton john, fail quail, quailudes, isqurail.
i loved the quails. in my hammock on my phone i tried to write a poem about them:
laying in the hammock,
i enjoy the gentle quails
singing their gentle songs.
i posted my haiku again to perth poets. i know its not 5-7-5 but the way i prnounce laying is "laing" and the way i pronounce singing is "sinngng" so it is still technically a good haiku. also, you dont have to follow the rules with poetry.
again someone upset me by sending me a better poem about the subject; a poem by richard brautigan, probably also written in a hammock:
The Quail
There are three quail in a cage next door,
and they are the sweet delight of our mornings,
calling to us like small frosted cakes:\
bobwhitebobwhitebobwhite,
but at night they drive our God-damn cat Jake crazy.
They run around that cage like pinballs
as he stands out there,
smelling their asses through the wire.
unfortunately lana's god-damn cat dante found a way to get through the wire and all the quails promptly became feathers and bones.
this is one of the many tragedies of the sherwood manor.
