maylands - milan travel
i've never gone inside this big handsome building. milan travel is/was a 3rd party travel agency. i think they're out of business now. you can either blame covid or flight center.
now there are two businesses inhabiting this building:
"stop being boring" is a wacky giftshop that feels right out of the 2000s; i say that both positively (i miss wacky gift shops) and pejoratively (i don't want to relive the mighty boosh era). but, it is the fun shop in perth. they have a big collection of antique oddities that are genuinely odd - good kitsch, but also a lot of bad-bad-kitsch - button-pins, silly socks and comedic cards that scream "the quirky aunt". but, i did buy a pretty cool naked homer simpson doll, and a very mysterious copy of blinky bill that had somehow been shrunk down to the size of a matchbox (try reading size-1 font).
the second store was a bootleg tobacco store with a really cheerful lady who would always exclaim "how GOOD is smoking!!". she made me genuinely excited to get outside and light up my new cigs. unfortunately, i stopped smoking at the start of the year due to smoking-related lung problems and i never saw her again. 6 months after opening, the police closed the store down.
