maylands - oscar's kebabs
for a long time this was my favourite restaurant in maylands for its flourescent lighting and bright green walls. oscar was a kind faced man who would always say the same things to me:
felaffel kebab, dine in takeaway, you want egg and cheese?
i liked that the kebabs were always the same low price and always the same.
then one day i came in and oscar was holding a small baby and smiling a very big smile. he had become a grandfather, and i couldn't believe it. you don't always expect the shopkeepers in your life to have age progression and life events.
shortly after this, the walls were repainted a tasteful brown, the kebab prices doubled, and oscar was gone, yet the store kept his name. there were even pictures of oscar on the wall, done in AI art.
the other day we were discussing the jaqueline harper book "i who have never known men" and the natural question that came up was whether the wasteland in the book was earth or not. tim described the characters experience of this world as like our recent trip to the newly refurbished oscar's kebabs, "still oscars kebabs even though it is quite obviously not".
